Delicious dessert pizzas

Food & Cooking Blog

Pizza might traditionally have pride of place in the entrees and mains section of the menu but it can also be a fun and unique addition to the dessert section of the menu. Next time you are planning a pizza night why not add some yummy desert pizza. Here are some ideas for your toppings.

Chocolate

If you are looking for a way to add some chocolate to your meal there are a few option. A chocolate sauce such as Nutella spread can take the place of a tomato sauce based, providing a liquid surface to help keep your toppings in place. You can also add chocolate chips as a topping, or shaved chocolate on top of the pizza (where cheese would usually be) to create a secure topping level by melting on the top of the pizza. Make sure to cook the pizza at a lower than normal temperature (below 80 degrees Celsius), as chocolate can burn at a normal pizza cooking temperature.

Fruit

A combination of dried fruit such as chopped apricots and cherries and fresh fruit such as chopped apples and fresh berries can create interesting tastes and textures. It can also add some nutritional value by giving you some fibre as well as vitamins and minerals. Take a stroll through the fruit section of the supermarket to check out what delicious fruit is currently in season for some inspiration. Make sure to use thin slices so that they can warm at the lower cooking temperature.

Nuts

Another great way to get some extra oomph in your pizza is to include chopped nuts. They can add more texture, as well as provide some extra protein. Try sliced almonds or chopped walnuts which you can find in the baking section of the supermarket. Salted nuts can be great as well as they provide some interest to the taste profile and can accentuate the other tastes in your toppings.

Lollies

If you are planning on having a real extravaganza you can also try adding some gooey lollies. Try chopping up some lollies snakes or adding some small or chopped marshmallows to the top of your pizza. These should melt together during cooking and provide a yummy gooey mixture to help stick the rest of the toppings together.

If you don't feel like making your own pizza you can always call your local pizza delivery service and see which dessert pizzas they have on their menu.
